1) Keep on Calling to Free Ansar Mahmood!
PLEASE CALL!!! IT'S WORKING!!!
Ansar was first picked up in October 2001, when guards at a water
treatment
facility thought he looked suspicious. he has now been detained for 2
years.
his supporters have been negotiating with the top immigration official
in
Buffalo for his release, and asking Clinton and Schumer to support our
efforts.
they need to be pushed NOW...
FOLLOW UP CALL-IN DAY FOR ANSAR MAHMOOD
PLEASE CALL SENATOR SCHUMER'S NEW YORK CITY OFFICE: 212-486-4430
ASK THAT SENATOR SCHUMER WRITE A JOINT LETTER WITH SENATOR CLINTON ON
BEHALF OF ANSAR MAHMOOD.
The Call-In Day on Monday, December 15 was effective. Clinton's aide in
DC, Leecia Eve, who hasn't returned a phone call in weeks, called me
out
of the blue that afternoon. She said that Clinton's office has been
exploring writing a joint letter with Schumer for Ansar but weren't
willing to write a letter on their own right now. Since Schumer is in
NYC
for the coming month, we need to call his NYC office to let him know
that
Ansar needs his support now and that he should work with Clinton to
write
a joint letter to Mr. Cleary on Ansar's behalf. Senator Schumer's
Albany
office has been sympathetic but we need to get the word to the rest of
his
staff. So call this Monday, December 22. If you get really ambitious
make
a second call to LEECIA EVE IN CLINTON'S WASHINGTON OFFICE at
202-224-4451
and say you support Clinton's writing a joint letter with Senator
Schumer
on behalf of Ansar Mahmood.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THESE CALLS DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE! OUR ELECTED
REPRESENTATIVES ARE WELL-DEFENDED AGAINST US, BUT TOGETHER WE CAN SCALE
THE WALLS OF THEIR INDIFFERENCE!
If you have questions call Susan Davies 518-392-9477 or Bob Elmendorf
518-766-2992. Thanks for your interest and support!

2) Seven Things You Can Do to Help Free Farouk Abdel-Muhti
New York area Palestinian activist Farouk Abdel-Muhti has now been held
in
detention by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) since
April
26, 2002. He is not charged with any crime; he is being held allegedly
on
the basis of a 1995 deportation order even though the INS has been
unable
to deport stateless Palestinians like Farouk. In June 2001, the Supreme
Court ruled that detainees who cannot be deported within a reasonable
period--generally six months--must be released. But the government
continues to defy the law and keep Farouk in jail.
