There is important information below on Farouk's situation. We have written up a summary of his habeas case so far which you might find useful in answering people's questions; I'm sending that to you separately.

Please note that the cost of the van from New York to Harrisburg has gone down; we've gotten a better rental deal.

In solidarity,
David Wilson/Committee for the Release of Farouk Abdel-Muhti

1. Farouk Moved to Philadelphia on 3/23/04

On the morning of Mar. 23 the authorities moved Farouk to the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia. This was done without warning him and without notifying his lawyers. Apparently they told him the move was connected to the Mar. 30 hearing on Farouk's habeas case in Harrisburg--even though Philadelphia is not significantly closer to Harrisburg than the Hudson County Jail, where he has been held since December.

Given the history of Farouk's treatment by the authorities, we suspect that the move was intended to harm Farouk and disrupt his habeas petition. Why should he be moved a week before the hearing, and why to a place that is still a long ride from the court? They moved him one day before Farouk was supposed to meet with Shane Kadidal, the lead attorney in his habeas petition. (Shane is still going to meet with him before the hearing.)

We're still considering our position on the move to Philadelphia, but at least it should be a reminder that the government can't be trusted. Once again, I urge everybody who possibly can to attend the hearing to make sure they know that we're watching them. And if you have any media contacts, please urge them to attend if possible, and if not, to keep in touch with us for updates. =========================================================

2. Farouk's Contact Information in Philadelphia

Farouk is in the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia, 700 Arch Street, Unit 5 South, room 110. The phone number is 215-521-4000. His registration number is 12124067. Visiting hours are 8am to 3pm. Presumably he will be moved back to Hudson County Jail after the hearing, so we do not advise writing him in Philadelphia. They are apparently making it difficult to visit him, but it can't hurt to call them. ==========================================================

We've reserved a van for New York people. It will cost $15-20 for each of us. We'll be starting at 6 am at Lefrak City in Queens, probably with a stop at 6:15 am in Manhattan. Call us at 212-674-9499 and leave a message, or email freefarouk@yahoo.com with a copy to nicadlw@earthlink.net.

You can also take Greyhound (http://www.greyhound.com) from New York, $55 round trip. There's an 08:00am bus arriving at 12:30pm. To return, there's a 05:00pm bus arriving in NYC at 09:25pm and a 09:05pm bus arriving at 02:10am.

If you're coming from New Jersey, please contact Greg Pason from the New Jersey Committee to Free Farouk Abdel-Muhti, 201-803-7574 or info@anti-racist.org. Greg will be coordinating rides from New Jersey.

Even if you're coming on your own or from other areas, please give us a heads-up so that we'll have a sense of how many of us will be there, and so that we can tell you if there have been any changes in the hearing schedule.

Plan to be at the courthouse early, since there will probably be delays for metal detectors, etc. We plan to hold a brief press conference after the hearing so the legal team can give their assessment.

Please tell us as soon as possible if you can attend, and where you'll be coming from and how you expect to travel.
