May 1, 2004 Statement of Solidarity on the 1st of May from Farouk Abdel-Muhti to the people of the United States and to the people of the world My greetings to all of you with all my respect and dignity. I am grateful for the popular support you have given me in the struggle for my freedom, which I have now gained. But there are still many thousands of detainees and prisoners in jail who are suffering. We have won a victory, but we still have to win the war for justice, equality, and rights for both immigrants and for all the people in the nation who are fighting for democratic rights and social justice. On this significant day, which is the 1st of May, I am united with all of the workers in the nation and the world. I appeal to all of you to defend our human and civil rights, because these two pillars bring us together with dignity and concern, and make us the popular force which has the dynamic power to change the future. We must defend our principles with honor, in remembrance of the working martyrs who were killed defending the rights of workers and their struggle for an 8-hour day, so that they would no longer be exploited. Today in the United States the workers have the duty to resist and to struggle--not just for a shorter workday, but to defend their jobs against capitalist chauvinism which is choking the rights of the workers, thus shaming the administration of Washington that protects the corporations and abandons its sacred duty to protect the workers and peasants. 92% of the American farm workers now have to work for agribusiness and corporate hegemony. The immigrant worker has become the scapegoat of this administration and is not only exploited but also jailed, and even kicked out of the country without any regard from the government or the exploiters of his labor. Using the pretext of 9-11, the administration has taken advantage of the working class, which is the one that pays taxes, and it uses our money in the wars and occupations for the benefit of the big corporations and the protection of their satellite states like Israel. This money should be used here in the nation for education, hospitals, and homes, instead of ignoring the rights of the people. I appeal to all of you, we have to analyze and synthesize our situation so we may act correctly and not miscalculate the administration of George Bush, who pretends to impose the imperialist hegemony in the name of liberation in the Middle East. Today this war is costing us our children and the well- being of the nation, as well as the lives of the people of Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Palestinian people who are victims of the vulture Ariel Sharon, with his continued assassinations, massacres, destruction and occupation in the land of Palestine, with the green light from George Bush's administration. I call on all of you, we have to understand that we are not the owners of the big buildings, corporations, and real estate, but we are the workers who construct these things. We have to understand that we must stand up and take our rights instead of begging for them. I ask, "What is the reason we are not united--brothers, sisters, comrades, and workers--under the flag of the 1st of May, to demand the freedom of the thousands of immigrants and detainees who are treated like criminals? Why don't we help the prisoners-- the majority are African-American, Latin, South Asian, White, and poor and marginal people--to defend their rights for freedom, because they are suffering from inhuman conditions?" For these reasons, Albert Einstein was not mistaken when he analyzed the US policies and said, "The US political parties are largely financed and influenced by private capitalists. The capitalist class controls directly or indirectly the main source of information--the press, the radio, and education. Therefore, it is extremely difficult for the individual citizen to come to an objective conclusion and to make intelligent use of his political rights." I ask for all of you to unite shoulder to shoulder and to play a united role in alliance with the principles of the working class- -all of us struggling together with peace and love for everyone. Today we are in unity in the name of human rights and justice, and together we take the torch of the 1st of May to win--because united workers will never be defeated. We'll win!!! ========================================================= Committee for the Release of Farouk Abdel-Muhti PO Box 20587 Tompkins Square Station New York, NY 10009 Phone: 212-674-9499 Email freefarouk@yahoo.com Websites: www.freefarouk.org * freefarouk.netfirms.com ========================================================= |
